Come and Celebrate with CBE, APEN, and WCTC!

WE WON THE LAWSUIT! On June 4th 2009, Contra Costa County Superior Court Judge Barbara Zuniga tossed out the Environmental Impact Report for a major expansion at the Chevron Refinery, in Richmond, California. This is a significant victory over U.S. oil refinery expansions happening across the country!

Since the Spring of 2007, Communities for a Better Environment, Asian Pacific Environmental Network, and West County Toxics Coalition have worked to stop the expansion of the Chevron oil refinery in Richmond. We have accomplished the first step towards achieving this goal. Come and celebrate with us!

There is nothing to celebrate here. Because of this lawsuit (which will ultimately have no effect on improving the safety of the refinery or the community), 1500 workers are now jobless in the worst economy since the Great Depression. These people have families, and the social safety net is in tatters because of the budget crisis. Think about their kids, who now have no health insurance.

It's very fortunate that your organization is insulated from the worst effects of your decisions. I am a gay Asian-American, a democrat, an environmentalist, and an engineer, and I can tell you that this lawsuit is absurd. The bottom line is that the modernization project results in greatly increased safety within the refinery and the community. My coworkers and I are ashamed that our ethnicity is now tied to your ignorance and paranoia.

If you want to harass "Big Oil" and feel good about yourselves, find some way to do it that doesn't bring despair to thousands of families. And please stop driving your car, flying in planes, or using any product made by hydrocarbons (hint: that's just about everything), so that at least you're not a hypocrite.

Apparently, you do not know those organizations like CBE, APEN, and et al yet. If there is anything happened to the labor unions, they will be the first to stand up side-by-side with the labor unions, and they will defend for the labor unions (workers' rights)!

Friend, I'm afraid that you may be "used" by the corporation that they like to pit community against labor unions. This is wrong.

Chervon needs to be a good neighbor, that they can amend their design to meet the standard, and protect health and safety. They have $$$ after the last 8 years of the Bush's era.

Please do not fall through the victim of corporation's profiteering!

Regards,
CK
