Development Assistant
The Asian Pacific Environmental Network (APEN) was founded in 1993 to bring together a collective voice among the diverse Asian and Pacific Islander communities to develop an alternative agenda for environmental, social and economic justice, and fight for the right of all people to a clean and healthy environment in which to live, work and play. In pursuit of this vision, APEN’s strategies include: building grassroots power, strengthening organizing capacity in API communities, forging strategic alliances, and advancing proactive agendas & policies towards systemic change.
Position Summary:
The Development Assistant’s primary responsibility is to support APEN’s overall development work, with a focus on supporting the ongoing growth and stewardship of APEN’s individual donor base. This is achieved through working with APEN’s Development team to: 1) coordinate individual gifts and the major donor program including mailings and events, 2) assist in tracking and maintaining foundation calendar and files, and 3) provide administrative and logistical support for organizational events, meetings, etc. The Associate Director will provide supervision and support for the Development Assistant. As part of this dynamic organization, there is room for growth and development.
Primary Roles & Responsiblities:
Individual Gifts Coordination and special events
- Assist the implementation of individual donor program
- Coordinate the production and mailing of annual appeals, other donor mailings, and phone banks
- Regularly update and maintain database, and manage donor acknowledgement process
- Write and edit documents, newsletter articles, and correspondence
- Coordinate special events and activities with individual donors, including house parties, dinners, and briefings
- Work with volunteers, board and staff to engage in fundraising
Assist Foundation Fundraising
- Maintain foundation calendar and files
- Assist with attachments for proposals and reports
- Conduct research and other foundation related duties as they come up
Administrative
- Logistical support for organizational events; coordination and documentation of staff and board meetings
- Archive newsletters, press clippings, photos, etc.
- Provide other administrative support as needed
Required Qualifications:
- Deep commitment to mission and principles of APEN and environmental justice;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Interest and/or experience in individual/grassroots fundraising;
- Detail-oriented, ability to prioritize and follow through with multiple tasks to meet deadlines;
- Self motivated, responsible, self disciplines, and able to work well in a team, as well as independently;
- Excellent PC literacy, especially in MS Office Suite and Filemaker Pro; HTML desirable;
- Good sense of humor and grace under pressure.
Salary Range:
High twenties to low thirties, depending on experience. Full benefits package includes health, dental, paid vacations and sick leave.

Lead Organizer / Special Projects Coordinator

In pursuit of this vision, APEN’s strategies include: building grassroots power, strengthening organizing capacity in API communities, forging strategic alliances, and advancing proactive agendas & policies towards systemic change. The Laotian Organizing Project (LOP), founded in 1995, is a membership-based, intergenerational organizing project of APEN based in the Laotian Community in West Contra Costa County. LOP has worked to develop innovative models for organizing in API refugee communities, and has engaged in environmental justice campaigns including campaigns for a multi-lingual warning system for refinery accidents, school guidance programs, tenant rights and affordable housing.
Position Summary:
The primary goal of the Lead Organizer is to build an effective base-building program to organize and develop the leadership of community members in West Contra Costa, CA to make positive changes in the community through issue and electoral campaigns. The Lead Organizer will also participate in APEN’s work to support organizing capacity building in API communities in the state and beyond. The Lead Organizer will report to the Program Director, work closely with the API Network Coordinator, and will supervise a team of 1-2 organizing staff based out of Richmond, CA.
Primary Roles & Responsiblities:
- Leads the creation and implementation of local organizing goals, strategies and campaigns including:
- Recruitment program to expand our grassroots membership base;
- Strong and vibrant leadership development program for grassroots leaders and members;
- Issue and electoral campaigns aligned with the organization’s long term change goals;
- Fundraising activities involving grassroots leaders and members;
- Local alliance building work to shift the long-term power equation in West County;
- Help create success indicators and systems to track and document progress;
- Maintain a working knowledge on West County political landscape and API immigrant and refugee issues.
- Supervise, Manage and Develop LOP Staff. Staff evaluation, training and development; monitoring personnel policies; and creating a learning environment that supports staff in doing their best work.
- Special Projects – Training & capacity-building to support emerging API organizing efforts
- Help create and execute training curriculum for APEN’s API organizing capacity-building program
- Help incorporate electoral organizing and civic participation in APEN’s ongoing local community organizing.
- Organizational Development
- Help develop and monitor annual budgets for the LOP and participate in overall APEN fundraising strategies.
- Support APEN’s overall organizational development and ability to respond to opportunities and challenges.
Required Qualifications:
- Deep commitment to APEN’s mission, environmental and social justice.
- Self-confidence and the capacity to create and independently move forward a complex agenda;
- Ability to identify and set priorities in line with our goals and strategic direction;
- Successful track record of at least 3 years in: community organizing (particularly in low income and/or immigrant and refugee communities) facilitation, supervisory experience, program management;
- Leadership and communication skills (both written and verbal) with ability to connect across multiple audiences;
- Strong teamwork skills, ability to develop a team-oriented environment, and commitment to democratic participation;
- Good sense of humor and grace under pressure;
- Language capacity in Laotian languages, such as Khmu, Mien, Hmong, and Lao are preferred but not required.
Salary Range: High thirties to mid forties, depending on experience. Full benefits package includes health, dental, paid vacations and sick leave.
